Game Preview: Eagles vs. Falcons

The Eagles are in Atlanta to take on the Falcons on Sunday Night Football, with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. Our live coverage begins with the Kickoff Show presented by Axalta at 7:50 p.m. before the game is ]televised nationally on NBC.

Coming off a come-from-behind win over Washington to open the season, the Eagles battle a familiar foe in the Falcons, a team they've played in each of the past four seasons (including playoffs). The Eagles have won the past three meetings, but the last two battles have come down to an incomplete fourth-down pass to Falcons All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones in the end zone.

This is Atlanta's home opener and the Falcons are looking forward to being home after being humbled 28-12 in Week 1 by the Minnesota Vikings. In fact, the Vikings led 28-0 entering the fourth quarter before the Falcons put some points on the board.

The Vikings forced three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble) and blocked a punt, and all four of those instances eventually resulted in touchdowns. The Falcons were gashed for 172 yards on the ground as Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins attempted just 10 passes.

2. Can Carson Wentz continue his third-down magic?

The franchise quarterback was phenomenal in the season opener, especially on the money down. Wentz was 12-of-13 (he completed his last 12 attempts) for 197 yards and all three of his touchdowns. And a good chunk of those conversions came on third-and-long. Head coach Doug Pederson said this week that the team can't rely on Wentz to always keep drives alive under those conditions, so the Eagles must be better on first and second down to get Wentz in more manageable situations. What's one way to do that? The run game, so ...

3. What will be the running back rotation for the Eagles?

Miles Sanders led the Eagles with 11 carries and that doesn't include the brilliant touchdown run that was taken off the board by a penalty that should not have been called. Darren Sproles matched Sanders with 12 total touches and also led the team in rushing yards last week. Against Atlanta's fast defense, expect more of Sanders and Jordan Howard, who averaged 7.3 yards per carry in his Eagles debut.

4. What's the DeSean Jackson effect?

Jackson had eight catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns in his Eagles homecoming last weekend. Wentz said this week that he expects the Falcons to force the Eagles to be patient and take a lot of underneath throws. That points to an added emphasis on the run game. It also means that Jackson should open things up for the "other" big-play pass catchers like Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Zach Ertz, and Dallas Goedert. Still, when you have a strong-armed quarterback like Wentz, a take-the-top-off playmaker like Jackson, and a national audience, No. 10 will want to help make a statement.

5. How will the defensive line rotation change?

The Eagles won the game against Washington, but lost defensive tackle Malik Jackson for the season with a foot injury. Jackson's length and speed were expected to provide a pass-rush element alongside Fletcher Cox. Now, Tim Jernigan returns to his role as a starter and there will be more snaps for Hassan Ridgeway as well as new addition Akeem Spence. And, of course, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will move ends Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry inside on passing downs.

The Falcons, who spent two first-round picks along the offensive line, will be without top draft pick guard Chris Lindstrom. The second first-round pick, Kaleb McGary, will match up against Graham off the edge.

By The Numbers

5 – Julio Jones has five 100-yard receiving performances against the Eagles since he entered the league in 2011. No other receiver in the league has that many vs. the Eagles.

51 – It should come as no surprise as Jones has been targeted 51 times in the last three meetings (including playoffs). However, Jones has scored no touchdowns in the three-game span and the Falcons lost each matchup.

.750 – Philadelphia ranks third in the NFL in prime-time winning percentage (.750, 12-4) since 2016 (including playoffs), behind New England (.773) & Seattle (.767).

64.7% – In Week 1 vs. Washington, the Eagles enjoyed the best regular-season third-down performance (64.7%, 11-of-17) of the Doug Pederson era.

New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams: Series history and predictions

Perhaps the most anticipated game in week 2 of the NFL season pits the New Orleans Saints at the Los Angeles Rams. Today's game is not only a rematch of last season's highly controversial NFC championship game, but is also a showdown between two of the top favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIV. This is the 77th meeting between two clubs that for 31 years were rivals in the NFC West division. The Rams own a 42-34 edge in the series, and a 29-25 advantage when the franchise was based in Los Angeles (they were the St. Louis Rams between 1995-2015). The Saints have a 16-22 record in road games against the Rams, including an 11-15 record against them in Los Angeles, location of this afternoon's contest.

The Saints very first game as a franchise was against the Los Angeles Rams, on September 17, 1967 in a home game at Tulane Stadium. Saints rookie John Gilliam scored a touchdown on the very first play in his franchise's history when he took the opening kickoff back 94 yards. Unfortunately, the Saints lost that day to Los Angeles 27-13. New Orleans would lose their first four games against the Rams between 1967-70, and drop 14 of 17 against them through the 1977 season. That included losses the first nine times they would play the Rams in L.A., when they were outscored by an average of 32-13. New Orleans would finally gain a road win against their rivals on October 22, 1978. The Saints were outgained in total yardage for the game, 342-118, but the New Orleans defense forced six turnovers (3 fumbles and 3 interceptions) while holding the Rams to just a field goal. A 19-yd. 4th quarter touchdown pass from Archie Manning to Tony Galbreath would give the Saints a 10-3 upset win.

New Orleans would finally build a consistent playoff contender through the middle of the 1980's and late into the decade. After another five game losing streak to their division rival from '83-85 against a Ram team built around Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, the Saints would take control of the series. Despite a prolific Los Angeles offense fueled by the talents of quarterback Jim Everett along with receivers Henry Ellard and Flipper Anderson, New Orleans would have a 13-3 edge over their rivals between 1987-94. During that run, the Saints would win nine straight games in Los Angeles during the series. They tipped the scales in the rivalry primarily led by a dominant defense centered around their intimidating Dome Patrol linebacking corps of Pat Swilling, Sam Mills, Vaughan Johnson, and Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson. By the mid-1990's, both teams had fallen from contender status without winning a championship. Everett had been traded from L.A. to New Orleans, but the great Saints defense from the previous seven years had crumbled. The Pro Bowl quarterback would get a measure of revenge against his former team though, going 3-1 against them and winning 31-15 during their final meeting in L.A. before their relocation to St. Louis in 1994.

These two would meet in the postseason for the first time on December 30, 2000 in a wild card match up. The Saints had won the NFC West, and would host their rivals, but the St. Louis Rams came in as the defending Super Bowl champs and in possession of one of the most high flying offenses in NFL history. New Orleans charged out to a 31-7 fourth quarter lead thanks to five turnovers caused and three scoring passes from Aaron Brooks to Willie Jackson. The Rams came roaring back late in the game though, and pulled to within 31-28 with just minutes to go. A fumbled punt by St. Louis returner Az-Zahir Hakim and subsequent recovery by the Saints Brian Milne preserved the win though, clinching the first playoff victory in New Orleans Saints history. League realignment after the 2001 season would move the Saints into the newly formed NFC South division. New Orleans has been 5-6 against their former divisional foes since the split, as both teams have returned to top contender status within the last few seasons.

Chicago Bears vs. Denver Broncos 2019: Prediction Against The Spread, Betting Odds For NFL Week 2

The Denver Broncos ended the Week 1 schedule with a thud, losing 24-16 to the Oakland Raiders in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. In Week 2, Joe Flacco and Co. will try to pick up their first win of the 2019 NFL season against the Chicago Bears, who won the NFC North last season with a 12-4 record and the conference’s best defense.

Chicago’s season opener didn’t go as planned, either. The Bears were beaten by the rival Green Bay Packers at home 10-3. Only one other team failed to score a touchdown on the first weekend of the season.

The betting public seems to think Chicago has a much better chance to bounce back when the Bears visit the Broncos Sunday afternoon. Denver has moved to a 2.5-point home underdog, according to OddsShark. The betting line was a pick’em before the Raiders upset the Broncos Monday night.

The shift in the point spread makes Denver the right pick in Week 2. There are several reasons to believe the Broncos will pull out the victory for their first win of the season.

Even when they don’t have a particularly good team, the Broncos can be difficult to beat in Denver, especially at the start of the season. The Broncos began 2018 with home wins against the Seattle Seahawks and Raiders before ending the year with a 6-10 record. In their 5-11 campaign two years ago, Denver beat the Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys at Mile High in the season’s first two weeks.

Over the last eight years, the Broncos have won 12 straight home games that have taken place in either Week 1 or Week 2. The Bears have lost their first road game of the season in four straight years.

Denver’s offensive struggles from Week 1 are more than likely to carry over to Week 2. Chicago’s defense looked to be in mid-season form against Green Bay, holding the Packers’ offense to 213 yards and one touchdown. Aaron Rodgers was sacked five times, and Flacco figures to have a poor game.

But the same could be said for Mitchell Trubisky and the Bears’ offense.
